Watch Folders: Automatic Video Compression on Autopilot

March 20, 2026 • VideoRecompress Studio Team

If you regularly receive new video files — from security cameras, a production pipeline, screen recordings, or drone footage dumps — manually compressing each one is tedious. Watch Folders in VideoRecompress Studio solve this by monitoring directories and automatically compressing new videos the moment they appear.

How It Works

Watch Folders continuously scan a directory for new video files. When a new file is detected and fully written to disk, VideoRecompress Studio automatically recompresses it using the preset you assigned. No clicking, no dragging, no waiting.

  1. Open the Watch Folders section in the sidebar.
  2. Click Add Folder and select a directory to monitor.
  3. Choose a compression preset (e.g., Security Archive, Phone Archive, Max Savings).
  4. Click Start — the folder is now watched.

That is all. Every new video dropped into that folder will be compressed automatically.

Smart File Detection

Watch Folders do not just blindly grab files. The system waits for each file to stabilize before processing, preventing issues with partially uploaded or still-recording files. It scans every 30 seconds and tracks which files have already been processed, so nothing gets compressed twice.

Configuration Options

  • Preset selection — Pick any built-in or custom compression preset.
  • Include subfolders — Optionally monitor nested directories too.
  • Auto-start on launch — Resume watching automatically when the app starts.
  • Custom output directory — Save compressed files to a different location, or keep them alongside the originals.

Use Cases

Security and Surveillance

Security cameras generate huge volumes of footage daily. Point a Watch Folder at the recording directory with the Security Archive preset (H.265, CRF 28) and reclaim 50–60% of storage space automatically.

Content Creators

After recording a session, drop your raw files into a watched folder. They will be compressed with your preferred settings while you move on to editing or uploading.

Production Pipelines

Teams that receive video deliverables from multiple sources can set up a shared network folder. Watch Folders support network drives through reliable polling, so files from any contributor are automatically processed.

Drone and Action Camera Footage

After importing footage from an SD card to your computer, Watch Folders can compress everything in the import directory without any manual steps.

Live Monitoring

While a Watch Folder is active, you can see its status in real time: whether it is watching, scanning, or actively processing a file. The UI shows the number of processed files, any errors, and the total space saved for each batch.
